It was one-and-done for Needham High’s hockey teams as MIAA Division  1 tournament play got underway Wednesday. The girls, seeded No. 17, fell to No. 16 Braintree, 5-1, at Zapustas Rink in Randolph. In the first period, Sarah Porras scored the Rockets’ only goal, but Needham trailed 2-1 after one and it only got worse from there. Coach Allisyn Furano’s team finishes the season with a 12-8-1 record.

Generating any offense was also a problem for the boys, who were shut out 4-0 by No. 10 seed Marshfield at the Bog Ice Arena in Kingston. Marshfield (17-3-3), scored a goal in each of the first two periods and pulled away with two more in the third. Coach Michael Hoban’s Rockets, the No.23 seed, went 11-9-1 this season.

The boys and girls basketball teams begin Division 1 tournament play Thursday in a home doubleheader at Needham High. At 5 p.m., the 15th seed boys (13-7) take on No. 18 Taunton (14-6). Last year, Coach Paul Liner’s Rockets made it all the way to the state final before losing to Worcester North.

Then at 7 p.m., Coach Hannah Carroll’s girls, the No. 10 seed, take the floor against No. 23 Shrewsbury (11-9). Needham’s girls had a strong regular season, finishing 14-6. Both teams had preliminary-round byes.
