History and culture came together in a celebration of India’s 78th Independence Day on Aug.17 at Powers Hall. Organized by the Indian Community of Needham, India Day featured musical and dance performances, a student presentation on the milestones that led to India’s independence in 1947 and a fashion show of traditional attire highlighting different regions of the country. ICON president Raja Shaikh said the event, which drew some 250 people, was not only to celebrate democracy and freedom, but also to create awareness about the broad diversity that exists within Indian culture and to further a shared sense of community in Needham and neighboring communities.
