Needham Observer co-founder and managing editor Frederica Saylor Lalonde and Needham community activist Stacie Shapiro were recognized as Commonwealth Heroines at a State House ceremony June 26. They were among 125 women from across the state honored by the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women for “unheralded acts on a daily basis that make our homes, neighborhoods, cities and towns better places to live.”
Lalonde was nominated by state Sen. Becca Rausch as a dynamic member of the Needham community involved with the public schools and whose work with the Observer “revived local journalism and expanded connections within the community,” reporting on stories that keep people informed.
Shapiro was nominated by state Rep. Josh Tarsky as a “consummate advocate” who makes the voices of others heard. “Her deep commitment to civic engagement serves as a beacon in our community and has inspired many young women to follow in her footsteps.”
