A fire broke out in the garage attached to the home at 80 Pinewood Road around midnight Tuesday. No one was injured as the extensive blaze breached the garage doors into the kitchen of the home.
“The family was alerted by their smoke alarms and they evacuated the house,” said Needham Assistant Fire Chief Donald Anastasi. “It was a heavy volume of fire that was knocked down fairly quickly,” he said. “There was pretty extensive damage throughout the whole entire first floor. The garage really was fully incinerated.”
The cause of the fire is difficult to determine because of the extensive damage to the garage, but Anastasi said they suspect a battery or an electrical problem and have notified the State Fire Marshal’s office. “The homeowner mentioned they had battery-operated or electric scooters in the garage. So the thought is it’s either a potential electrical malfunction or a battery situation,” he said.
“The crews did a good job. That easily could have been a fire that the next thing you know it was fully involved,” said Anastasi. “If they don’t stop it in that quick initial attack, then you lose the whole structure.”
