Not only will you have fun riding the Ferris wheel at the Rotary Club of Needham’s 9th annual carnival, you’ll also see an amazing view of town, especially at sunset, according to Bill Paulson.

The upcoming community event, which runs from July 24-27, has attracted large crowds in years past. “The games are fun, the rides are great,” said Paulson, a Rotary Club board member.

There is no entrance fee, but tickets are required for the dozen or so rides which cost between $3-$6.

Hungry attendees can satisfy their cravings for sticky-sweet, salty or savory treats such as fried Oreos, cotton candy, slushies, ice cream, burgers and more as they enjoy themselves at the family-friendly celebration.

“I’m a fan of fried dough,” said Paulson.

Ted Shaughnessy, Rotary foundation chairman, said his grandchildren “like the thrill rides.” Every year he works with local officials and Cushing Amusements to ensure the popular event remains a reality.

“We’re trying to make fun for the community,” said Shaughnessy, who recommends visitors check out the carnival and do some serious people watching even if they don’t go on any rides or grab a bite.

Visitors also can play a game of chance. Featuring “typical” carnival games, Shaughnessy said his favorite is a fishing contest where “everybody wins a prize.”

Funds raised at the carnival help pay for the event and any leftover money goes toward the Rotary Club’s numerous charitable endeavors, said Shaughnessy.

The group helps local, regional, national and international causes, he said. Past projects have included Needham scholarships, senior center events and community garden assistance, as well as donations to Ukraine and Uganda, to name a few.

The carnival will take place at the upper parking lot of Needham High School, at the top of Admiral Gracey Drive, on the following days/times:

  • Thursday, July 24, 6-10 p.m.
  • Friday, July 25, 6-10 p.m.
  • Saturday, July 26, noon to 10 p.m.
  • Sunday, July 27, noon to 6 p.m.
