Needham’s Greta Hammer wrapped up her outstanding junior year by taking the 2-mile race in last weekend’s MIAA Division 1 state track and field championships. Her time: 10:36.47. It followed Hammer’s cross-country triumph last fall and her winter victory in the 2-mile. Also, Needham senior Sofi Galan won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:06.11.
Several NHS teams are seeking Division 1 titles:

- The boys tennis team takes on the top seed, unbeaten St. John’s Prep Thursday afternoon at St. John’s Prep in Danvers. The Rockets, seeded eighth, advanced to the quarterfinals on Monday with a 4-1 home win over No. 9 Shrewsbury.
- After squeaking past Acton-Boxboro, 11-10, in the first round, the girls lacrosse team’s season ended Wednesday afternoon when it was beaten, 19-6, in the second round at No. 2 seed Wellesley. The Rockets, seeded 15th, finished 12-7 on the season. Wellesley (18-4) moves on to face Andover in the quarterfinals.
- The boys lacrosse season is also over. The No. 13 Rockets lost Wednesday night at No. 4 Andover, 20-9. The boys had beaten Arlington, 9-5, at home in the first round last weekend. Their record for the season: 12-8.
- The boys volleyball team, seeded No. 3, beat Woburn, 3-1, on Saturday and then Lowell, 3-0, on Monday. It will stay at home to host longshot Taunton, a No. 27 seed, in the quarterfinals at Needham High Friday afternoon at 5.
- The girls tennis team, seeded ninth, defeated Central Catholic, 5-0, in Round 1, but was eliminated in the second round on Monday by No. 8 seed Winchester, 4-1, at Winchester. The girls finished the season with a 14-5 record.
- After beating Whittier Regional Vocational Tech, 6-3, at home in last weekend’s first round, the No. 13 seed softball team was eliminated on the road Tuesday by No. 4 seed Attleboro, 6-4, to wind up with a 13-6 record.
