The case remains under investigation, but for now, “Lala” the wire-haired terrier mix that spent six days in the snow, is doing well.

According to Needham Police she was abandoned Jan. 22 in a parking lot off Dwight Road by “a person who does not live in Needham.” But Needham residents joined in the search to find her after the NPD asked for the community’s help in a Facebook post.

“We’d like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who shared the post and helped spread the word, your support truly made a difference,” they wrote Jan. 27. Animal Control Officer David Parsons as well as the NPD day shift and the Needham Fire Department were credited with safely locating the dog.

“This dog had been out there for six days; we were trying to get it for six days. So you can imagine what this dog has gone through with the weather we had,” Parsons told the Observer.

Because of the active investigation Parsons couldn’t comment further, saying only that “Whoever decided to do what they did was a bad idea.”

NPD continues to post updates, and on Jan. 28 wrote that the dog is on antibiotics for her feet and veterinarians expect her to make a full recovery. “We cannot thank this community enough for the overwhelming support. It truly takes a village, and Needham showed up in a big way.”

The dog is at a local animal hospital. For those interested in helping with the costs of the medical care the NPD has offered this link to donate to the Working Dogs Foundation which they say will work with the veterinary hospital to make sure all costs are covered.
