Cheers went up at The Common Room at 5:57 Tuesday evening when the SpaceX Dragon capsule carrying Sunita Williams splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico, returning her to Earth after nine months in space.
The safe landing of Needham’s hometown astronaut was celebrated by a crowd of residents, former classmates and students at a watch party at the Dedham Avenue restaurant. Owner Tom Griffin said he and his partners planned the party because Sunita is such a beloved figure in town. “I think a lot of people shared that same sentiment that they really wanted to cheer her on when she comes home,” he said.
Williams and fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore had crewed a test flight to the International Space Station last June for what was planned to be an eight-day stay. But it turned into more than 280 days because their Boeing Starliner spacecraft had mechanical problems, requiring them to wait for the arrival of another craft to bring them home.

Original plans called for Williams to have one visit with Needham students while she was in space, but because of her extended stay she ended up having time for three via video conference from space. One was with students at Needham High School and two were with students at Sunita Williams Elementary School. Principal Kiana Brunson said the community was buzzing with excitement about her return.
“Suni is an amazing role model for both students and adults in our school community, especially being a woman of science. This whole experience has been super exciting for our students and community to witness,” said Brunson. “When Suni returns and settles back into her earthly routines, we hope to have her connect with the school community.”
Students from SWES and their parents joined in The Common Room watch party, which Griffin felt created a moment that brought people together. “It was great to see everybody united. Rather than point out what’s different, point out what we have in common. We have a lot in common and we should all get behind each other,” he said.
“Needham really got behind one of their own. It’s great.”
