After 14 years in office, retiring state Rep. Denise Garlick has touched the lives of thousands of constituents in Needham, Dover and Medfield. On Monday, a group of supporters, friends and family are throwing a public party to thank her for her years of service.
“She is always very focused on the people that she works with,” said Dan Matthews, the former Needham Select Board chair who is helping to organize the event. “A lot of political people are basically just looking to get onto the next thing, but Denise, if a constituent is talking to her about their problem, that’s what she’s focused on, too.” Now, he implied, it’s time to turn the tables and focus on Denise.
Powers Hall on the top floor of Needham Town Hall will be open Monday from 5:30-8 p.m. There will be food, a chance to mingle with Garlick and fellow supporters, and “a few speeches, but not too long,” Matthews said. “I’m sure Denise will have a few things to say. The experience that she’s built and the work that she’s done, I think are worth hearing about.”
Town Hall is an appropriate venue for the celebration, Matthews said. “When Denise was on the Select Board, the renovation of Town Hall was one of her priorities.” From her time on the Board of Health to the Select Board to serving as Needham’s state representative, Garlick has been contributing to the community for decades. That’s something to celebrate.
